Where Is It?

Position words such as in, on and under are one of the most common speech and language targets. Pupils hear “find the cat under the table” and pick the right picture, or put the cat in the right place themselves. After a try that isn’t right, the game says what the word means (“under means below it”) and lets them look again.

For EYFS–KS2. About 5 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, no reading needed.

• Understand in, on and under, then next to, behind and in front of
• Follow a spoken instruction with a position word
• Use position words to say where things are

Tips for teachers

• Teach one word at a time. Start with in, on and under.
• Use real objects too: a teddy and a box, a ball and a table.
• Sign or gesture each word as the game says it.
• Ask pupils to say the sentence back: “the cat is under the table”.
