Letter Tracing

Pupils trace lower-case letters with a finger, and the letter colours in as they go. Letters follow UK letter formation: the right starting point, direction and order of strokes, with a green start dot and arrows to guide them. Made for the interactive whiteboard: big letters, a forgiving path, and only one finger counts, so resting hands don’t get in the way. Letters: m, a, s, d, t, i, n, g and o.

For EYFS–KS1. About 5 minutes. Senses & listening. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

What pupils practise

• Form lower-case letters from the right starting point
• Move in the right direction: round letters go anticlockwise
• Follow the order of strokes, such as the dot on i and the cross on t
• Link each letter to a word that starts with it

Tips for teachers

• Press Show me first, and say the formation out loud as it draws: “round, up and down”.
• Let pupils trace in the air or on the carpet before the board.
• Start with Relaxed accuracy and all the guides. Take the arrows away as they grow confident.
• Use the example words to link each letter to its sound.
