Sort It

Everyday things appear one at a time, and pupils put each one in the right group: food, animals, clothes or toys. Each group has its own icon and colour, and the sorted things pile up inside. Sorting into groups builds vocabulary and helps pupils find the words they need.

For EYFS–KS2. About 5 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

What pupils practise

• Sort everyday things into groups
• Name things and the group they belong to
• Explain why something goes in a group

Tips for teachers

• Start with 2 groups, then try 3 or 4.
• Ask “why does it go there?” and model the answer: “a hat is clothes, you wear it”.
• Sort real objects from a feely bag after playing.
• Turn off the names under the pictures to practise word-finding.
