Letter Garden

A picture appears and the word is read aloud. Pupils pick the letter it starts with, and a flower grows in the garden for each one. It uses the same letters as Letter Tracing, in the same order (m a s d t i n g o), drawn in school print shapes, so the two games work well together.

For KS1–KS2. About 6 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, works without sound.

• Hear the first sound in a spoken word
• Match the sound to its letter
• Link phonics to real words and pictures

Tips for teachers

• Say the word slowly and stretch the first sound: “mmm-oon”.
• Start with 2 letters to choose from, then move up to 3 or 4.
• Play Letter Tracing first to practise the same letters.
• Find real objects in the classroom that start with the same sound.
