Say What You Want

Build a request from symbol cards, like on a communication board or talker: “I want” + ball + “please”. Each card says its word as it goes on the sentence strip, then the game says the whole request and hands the thing over: “Here is the ball.” Cards use the colours many AAC systems use (green for doing words, orange for things, pink for social words) and always show a symbol and a word.

For EYFS–KS3. About 5 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, no reading needed, works without sound.

What pupils practise

• Ask for something with a symbol, or with “I want” and a symbol
• Build a two- or three-word request in order on a sentence strip
• Add “please” to a request
• Find the right core word among others, such as stop and help

Tips for teachers

• Model on the pupil’s own board or talker as the game speaks: point to “I want”, then the thing.
• Start with one card, then add “I want”, then “please”.
• Tap the sentence strip to hear the request again, as pupils do on a talker.
• Follow up with real objects: when a pupil asks for the ball in the game, give them a ball.
