What Are They Doing?

Pip is eating, sleeping, running, jumping and more. Pupils find the picture for an action word (“Which one is jumping?”) or, for readers, pick the word for the picture. Each answer is said as a sentence, “Pip is jumping”, and a try that isn’t right still teaches a word: “In that one, Pip is running.” Start with six everyday actions, then add reading, waving, kicking and singing.

For EYFS–KS2. About 5 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory, no reading needed.

• Understand everyday action words (verbs)
• Match an action word to a picture
• Hear and say “who is doing what” sentences
• Read action words (in the word mode)

Tips for teachers

• Act each one out together: jump when Pip jumps, pretend to eat when Pip eats.
• Use the Colourful Semantics “what doing” colour (yellow) on your own cards alongside.
• Ask “what is Pip doing?” and wait, before the game says it.
• Take photos of pupils doing the same actions and talk about them.
