Build the Word

Pupils see a picture and hear a word, such as dog, then build it letter by letter in three sound boxes, from left to right. It uses the same letters as Letter Tracing and Letter Garden, drawn in the same school print shapes. If a letter doesn’t fit the next box, the game asks pupils to say the word slowly and listen for that sound.

For KS1–KS2. About 6 minutes. Literacy & communication. Low sensory.

What pupils practise

• Hear the sounds in a short word, in order
• Match each sound to its letter
• Build three-letter words from left to right

Tips for teachers

• Say the word slowly together, touching a box for each sound.
• Start with no extra letters, then add two extra letters to choose from.
• Turn on faint letters in the boxes for pupils who need to copy first.
• Build the same words with magnetic letters afterwards.
